There are only 358 people working at the E-Government National Centre, according to findings of the Prime Minister’s Office. The centre should house more than 500 employees who are capable of providing the requisite IT skills.

Even though the centre has limited resources (i.e. the number of staff), people working under the centre should be given proper training to help them specialise in the industry.

The Communications Minister yesterday was called to explain to the State Legislative Council (LegCo) why so many government-tendered information-technology (ICT) projects in the past had failed and what action the ministry had taken to curb the fail rate.

LegCo member Dato Paduka Hj Idris Hj Alms pointed out, "In 2005, out of 40 ICT projects tendered out, only 16 projects were carried out.

In Order for the e-Government initiative to be deployed effectively, government officers must change their mindset on the importance of training in the optimum use of ICT so they can adapt to the rapid pace of technological change and the challenges that arise from these changes, a senior c-Government official said.

During the "Interactive Workshop on Optimizing ICT: Brunei-India Cooperation" at the Haiti building in Angered Desha on Thursday, e-Government National Centre (EGNC) Director Hi Zahra Hz Abroad said that optimizing the use of ICT covered a wide spectrum, ranging from use of technology to daily communications and day-to-day information.

MTPL-Trigyn Croup, a private entity backed by the Indian government, is scheduled to submit a feasibility study on rolling out fibre-optic cable connections to homes to the Brunei Ministry of Communications today.

‘The group will submit the feasibility study to the Ministry of Communications. It's part of the ICT (information and communication technology) sector called 'fibre to home'." Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Riewad Warjri told The Brunei Times yesterday.

Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who is also the chairman of AiTi, underscored that the Interactive Workshop on Optimising ICT Brunei India Cooperation yesterday was a significant milestone in the Brunei-India ICT Cooperation following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in ICT on May 22, 2008 in New Delhi, India.

"I was made to understand that today's event was built upon an India-Brunei ICT panel discussion held last month on the scope and potential for cooperation in ICT between our two countries including ways in which India and Brunei can work together in further developing our respective ICT industries."
