MTPL-Trigyn Croup, a private entity backed by the Indian government, is scheduled to submit a feasibility study on rolling out fibre-optic cable connections to homes to the Brunei Ministry of Communications today.

‘The group will submit the feasibility study to the Ministry of Communications. It's part of the ICT (information and communication technology) sector called 'fibre to home'." Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Riewad Warjri told The Brunei Times yesterday.

Warjri explained that the feasibility study focuses on an infrastructure project to connect residential homes in Brunei to the Internet via fibre-optic cables capable of delivering minimum speeds one gigabyte, and at maximum speeds of up to 50Gb.

He added that the study follows both countries signing a Memorandum of Understanding (M0U) on ICT Cooperation during the visit of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to India in May 2008.

Among other areas the MoU covers cooperation opportunities in human resource development in ICT education computer systems, computer hardware and software, development and services, e-Commerce, e-Government and Internet applications. The team from MTPL-Trigyn Group, including the managing director, arrived in the Sultanate on Wednesday.

Wajri said that the Indian government has been working closely with its private entities on projects in India and abroad. A week ago, Brunei and India held a Joint Working Group Meeting on ICT at the Ministry of Communications in Berakas. The Indian delegation, accompanied by the Indian High

Commissioner to Brunei, was represented by the Additional Secretary of India's Department of Information Technology, Rakesh Singh, as well as India's E-Government Director Abhishek Singh and Senior Director of IC Division of India's Department of Information Technology, Rajiv Rastogi.

India has offered its assistance in technical capabilities to develop the ICT industry in Brunei, and has announced that it is willing to help Brunei with technical collaboration in human resource development and capacity building.

There are currently about 150 local ICT companies and 10 IT training centres in the Sultanate, and Brunei has allocated about $500-5000 million for over 200 IT projects in the country.

Over the past two decades. India has experienced rapid development in its ICT sector. The country's software exports currently stand at about US$47 billion (about $66.25bn), or 17 per cent of the country's total exports, up from US$1 million in1991.
