Brunei is now looking at various IT programmes in its search for the best model to adopt in its efforts to become a full-fledged e-Government. Among the renowned international IT firms it has apparently made contact with was Wipro Limited, a global IT services giant based in India.

A workshop on the usage of a smart card was held yesterday morning, at the Immigration and the National Registration building in the capital.

With the introduction of the new smart card, a total of 161,774 (yellow), 29, 164 (purple) and 152,773 (green) card holders have been registered in the Sultanate.

Many countries around the world use information technology particularly the Internet to deliver public service in a much more customer-oriented and cost-effective way via e-Government drive. In general the e-Government is being driven by the need for the government to cut cost and improve efficiency, meet citizen expectations and improve citizen relationship and facilitate economic development.

Governments around the world are striving to achieve more efficiency, faster delivery of service and in order to do that government departments are turning to the Internet as a way of developing e-Government initiatives.

The slow moving red-tape linked to reams of paper and ledgers will soon be over as some of the key Ministries will be fully streamlined with the state of the art electronic systems that will not only speed up work but also bring the public service closer to an eGovernment, the buzzword of the 21st century.
