A signing agreement ceremony for three e-Government projects was held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs yesterday signalling the start of their implementation under the Ministry of Religious Affairs this year.

The first project, Network Infrastructure and Data Centre, was the first to be inked.

A day-long e-Government conference was held yesterday to meet the demands of modern government in Brunei held yesterday in Jerudong.

Entitled "Enabling Government into 21st Century" the talk was intended to share the capability and implementation experiences on government and non-government in the region and worldwide.

The government of His Majesty Sultan of Brunei is actively implementing a number of projects towards the realisation of e-Government.

This is being carried out through the development of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures.

These projects are designed to increase productivity and efficiency in all aspects of developments in the government departments.

Brunei's initiative to develop its e-government has attracted the attention of Professor Jim Tam from a leading Canadian University, who said he is confident the e-government project will set the Sultanate on the road to economic diversification.

Professor Tam of Ryerson University, who is also a former ICT manager, however said, "Achieving e-government success requires active partnerships between government, citizens and enterprises".

The success of e-government does not rely on hardware and software but on the effectiveness and skills of human resources and in continuous applications, practice and development of applications introduced in the respective e-government plans.

Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Pehin Dato Paduka Awg Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, made these remarks at the launching of the Enterprise Data Centre (EDC) at the Secretariat Building in the capital, which he officiated.
