The Ministry of Finance's Treasury Accounting and Financial Information Systems or TAFIS has achieved another breakthrough towards a "paperless" environment.

Starting from September 1, 2003, the process of physically delivering diskettes to banks containing EFT payments will be replaced by electronic transfers of these files. Likewise for bank statements, banks will now transfer 'eStatements' to TAFIS.

The formation of an e-Government programme in the national policy agenda is all about changes towards the quality of governance as well as service delivery in line with the 21st Century Civil Service Vision for Brunei Darussalam. It is His Majesty's Government's attempt to improve access, convenience, for effective interaction with the citizens and businesses.

Brunei has introduced E-government and Tafis as part of the government's mega projects.

The director of Language and Literature Bureau disclosed this at the closing of the multimedia and computer graphic course yesterday.

The drive towards Electronic Government or E-Government is considered as technological advancement in the nation's competitiveness in the global digital economy as well as bridging the digital divide with other technologically advanced countries.

Being a small nation, Brunei Darussalam is in a unique position of being able to take a relatively fresh approach to E-Government, industry analysts said.

The Prime Minister's Office announced that following the contractual signing between the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Accenture Private Limited for the "consultancy services in the formulation of a government-wide and ministerial IS/IT plan including the IS/IT implementation workshop and the development of the ministerial IS/IT plan", valued at $4.75 million last month, the first of the briefing, seminar and workshop series was held at the Civil Service Institute, Kampung Rimba, yesterday.
