A workshop on the usage of a smart card was held yesterday morning, at the Immigration and the National Registration building in the capital.

With the introduction of the new smart card, a total of 161,774 (yellow), 29, 164 (purple) and 152,773 (green) card holders have been registered in the Sultanate. The intentions of the Ministry of Home Affairs is to turn the smart card into a 'multi-purpose card' with a high level of security as a basis, in order to achieve the e-government.

The workshop was jointly organised by the Immigration and National Registration, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Alif Computer Sdn Bhd.

Sa Bali Bin Abas, the Director of Immigration and National Registration stated that a similar workshop was first held on June 22, 2002, with the main objective of providing better understanding on the advantages of smart cards.

He added the objective of the second workshop was more on application, for other government departments. Mr Dermalog Gmbh, the Managing Director of Alif Computer Sdn Bhd, delivered the briefing on the usage and facilities of the smart card.
