There are only 358 people working at the E-Government National Centre, according to findings of the Prime Minister’s Office. The centre should house more than 500 employees who are capable of providing the requisite IT skills.

Even though the centre has limited resources (i.e. the number of staff), people working under the centre should be given proper training to help them specialise in the industry.

These observations were made by YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Communications, during the fourth day of the 6th Legislative Council session yesterday.

The minister, meanwhile, noted that rapid progress in the field of ICT had been made on the proper accrediting of creative ICT businesses that would help step up development in this industry.

To ensure the rapid progress of e-Government in the country, it is imperative to adapt an efficient management system, to have good communication overseas and to provide opportunities for businesses, he said.

In light of this, about $23 million has been allocated for the exercising of various ICT programmes, the minister said, adding that the Brunei Government would give its full backing to ongoing projects based on their merits.

The development of the ICT industry has been an interesting debate and in the meeting, it was discussed that with the networking and interaction of local consultants, this can benefit businesses.

Implementing Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), increasing the number of foreign or local consultants in the country to oversee the development of the IT industry and working closely with the relevant government agencies are just some of the ways to ensure growth in the ICT industry.

With the implementation of a technical authority body, it would further “stimulate and enhance” technical issues enforced by the government. Besides supporting various government initiatives, this set-up could even help the government save money.

It was learnt that the Brunei Government “has made connections” with local and overseas consultants to explore more about the industry.

ICT companies, that are qualified and accredited as “creative businesses”, will also be allowed to participants in various government projects in the future.
