President Olusegun Obasanjo on July 6 launched the Computer for All Nigerians Initiative (CANI) aimed at easing access to, and use of computers amongst all Nigerians in irrespective of class, age gender and location.

President Obasanjo explained that the scheme is his administration's social programme designed to assist individual employee in both public and private sectors to purchase personal computers and laptops at discounted prices under affordable and convenient repayment plan.

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) has concluded arrangements to inject into the country’s teaching profession Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills and orientation.

Tagged the “National ICT Skills Acquisitions, Summits and Campaigns,” the training programme which is designed for registered teachers at primary, junior secondary and secondary schools as well as teachers in tertiary institutions (universities, colleges of education and polytechnics) will begin in July 2006 and will run through December 2006 in the 12 TRCN zones of Lagos, Minna, Uyo, Kaduna, Owerri, Maiduguri, Benin, Akure, Sokoto, Yola, Enugu and Jos.

As a contribution towards bridging the digital divide and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has introduced a pilot programme tagged Government Assisted Personal Computer programme for staff.

Launching the programme in Abuja, Mallam Nasir el Rufai, Minister of the FCT said countries with Information and Communication Technology enabled environment were experiencing revolutionary results in their economies.

TRCN e-Registration initiative will allow all existing professional teachers, new teachers requiring new registration with TRCN to enter and update their records in the TRCN database from anywhere and at anytime.

In his remark the director general of the council, Musa Ciwar said the online TRCN eRegistration system makes it convenient for all teachers to know their registration status, update status and make payments to TRCN using diverse channels such as banks, cyber cafes, e-Kisoks, GSM phones and other internet access points. He said "in this era of information and Communication technology no teacher will suffer before being register with the council"

The Federal Capital Territory FCT, has launched a pilot programme for its 4,000 employees to own personal computers.

The programme, which is christened “Government Assisted PC Purchase Programme (GAPP)” is one of the FCT administration’s programmes aimed at building an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) workforce.
