As a contribution towards bridging the digital divide and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has introduced a pilot programme tagged Government Assisted Personal Computer programme for staff.

Launching the programme in Abuja, Mallam Nasir el Rufai, Minister of the FCT said countries with Information and Communication Technology enabled environment were experiencing revolutionary results in their economies.

He said Nigeria accounts for 20 percent of Africa's population and therefore should embrace ICT to contribute its own quota to international development.

According to the Minister, his administration two years ago set out to establish e-government incentives aimed at improving organisational effectiveness, quality of service delivery, accountability and due process.

"He said an ICT literate workforce would be an asset adding, "the GAPP programme is geared towards increasing the computer penetration and literacy amongst FCT employees. The pilot programme is a worthy contribution towards bridging the digital divide, is also anticipated to serve as a mechanism for achieving the Millennium Development Goals of our country when the national model branded (computer for all Nigerians Initiative) is eventually implemented."

He said most of the ICT driven programmes have taken off stressing that the Abuja CTAccess programme, a citywide wireless fidelity (WiFi) Internet access commenced last year." "The programme is the first such city-wide network on the African continent. The WiFi is being up graded to a WiMax network very soon. For the sustainability of the various ICT programmes of FCTA, skills acquisition and capacity building programmes are also in top gear. About 100 unemployed youths in the FCT were trained on computer hardware maintenance. We view ICT as one sector that can easily absorb the 200,000 tertiary institution graduates our nation produces every year," he added.
