Telekom Malaysia has been tasked with laying the optical fibre and is expected to complete half the job by next year.
However, the e-Government initiative should move one step further and go beyond automation of government transactions, the prime minister said.
It had to build the types of services that the public needed and expected, including making full use of available multimedia tools, mobile access devices and social network on the Internet.

He said although Malaysia's improved ranking from 25th in 2007 to 11th last year was good, countries like the Dominican Republic and Brazil had done better, coming in 9th and 10th respectively.
MSC Malaysia’s presence within the GCC area is set to be further enhanced by its special high level executive roundtable meetings with Technology decision makers of key Government Departments of U.A.E. during the Gulf IT Expo (GiTEX), which is currently being held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Four of the top MSC Malaysia-status ICT Services companies ranging from those involved in Software Applications and Services, Electronic Government Solutions, System and Network Security to Outsourcing Solutions and Services, also represented the ICT sector at this executive meeting. The companies are KOMPAKAR, SKALI, Orea Technologies, and Solsis.
E-government in Malaysia goes back more than a decade. Electronic Government, or EG, was introduced as one of the earlier seven flagships of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) that was launched in August 1996.
