Transforming Government since 2001
The potential of information communication technology (ICT) should be utilised in the food production value chain, said Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar.

For example, the use of precision farming system at farm level could reduce the use of fertiliser, chemical and water.

"Modern technology must be applied in agriculture industry to attract more young people to join this field," he said after opening the Agriculture Expo and Convocation Festival of Universiti Putra Malayasia UPM (UPM) here Friday.

Noh said ICT could be used in the food traceability system.

The farm management system and food supply chain would be more organised via contract farming and strategic collaboration between manufacturers and retailers.

ICT application is also used extensively in development of food technologies such as bioinformatics, engineering process and product development.

"It will help increase the income of farmers, breeders and fishermen and guarantee the food supply," he added.
