Its Chairman Woon Tai Hai, said PIKOM is delighted with the Prime Minister’s announcement during the budget presentation, that Malaysia is expected to achieve a 4.5 to 5 per cent growth in 2012.
"PIKOM believes ICT will contribute significantly towards this, particularly through ongoing National Key Economic Area (NKEA) projects.
"We also welcome the government's initiatives to stimulate the ICT sector. One example is the allocation of RM50 million, targeted to increase the number of women entrepreneurs in the ICT sector, by promoting the e-commerce programme," he said in statement here today.
He said the move was a significant step towards not only uplifting the living standards of women but the ICT sector itself.
Woon said the RM200 rebate for the purchase of smartphones will encourage the Internet usage among youths.
"With this, PIKOM is hopeful of positive growth in e-commerce which may stimulate, the ailing ICT retail sector.
"An indirect positive impact on the ICT industry from the budget includes the RM600 million allocation for five R&D universities, particularly in the field of bio-tech and nano-technology, as well as the Graduates Employability Programme targeted at new entrants to the job market," he added.
He said the many incentives in the budget, including the financing for Small Medium Enterprises, are also poised to foster ICT growth in the sector.
Woon said PIKOM is also looking forward to the RM 38.7 million allocation to increase the quality of teachers for teaching English, Bahasa Malaysia and Science, which can be achieved by including ICT elements alongside.
