The 6.4 million people within the Klang Valley are about to enjoy better Internet connectivity and access to public services with the introduction of the eKL project.

The project, which covers three cities and an administrative centre – Kuala Lumpur, Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya and Putrajaya – will stretch from Hulu Langat area in the north down to Nilai in Negri Sembilan.

The initial broadband penetration target set by the Government's MyICMS 886 plan was too ambitious, said the Association of the Computer and Multimedia Industry of Malaysia (Pikom).

Lee Boon Kok, Pikom chairman, said the association is pleased that the Government has decided to aim for a more realistic target, as announced by the Deputy Prime Minister last week.

I-City, a proposed RM1.5 billion project being undertaken by I-Berhad, can serve as a pilot project for turning Shah Alam into a "knowledge city," says its managing director, Eu Hong Chew.

Given that a "knowledge city" uses information and communication technology (ICT) to facilitate everyday life, he said I-City could help the Selangor government achieve its aspiration to make the state capital a "knowledge city."

I-Bhd is reviewing its development plans in order to complete i-City within five years instead of the originally planned period of 10 years.

Chairman Datuk Lim Kim Hong said the gross development value of the 72-acre development had also been revised upwards from RM1.5bil to RM2bil.

Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) plans to set up two more rural information and communication technology (ICT) projects in the state to help address the rural-urban digital divide.

Dr Alvin Yeo, the deputy dean of the computer science and information technology faculty, said the projects would be similar to eBario, a pilot project started by Unimas in 2001 to provide ICT to an isolated rural community.
