The portal ranked 15th in 2007 and moved closer to the top 10 last year with 1,115 online services for government agencies, businesses, and a one stop centre for the public to deal with all government related services.

Malaysia’s government portal, www.malaysia.gov.my, has been ranked top 11 among 198 countries which offers online Electronic Government (EG) services by Brookings Institution in the United States.

“Malaysia was ranked 15th in 2007 and moved close to the top ten position last year,” said Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) Director-General Datuk Normah Md Yusof.

In 2008, Portal myGovernment won the World IT Services Alliance (WITSA) Award in conjunction with World ICT Congress (WCIT).

She said the public can now deal with the government anywhere and any time, thanks to the discovery of the Internet.

Normah said the online electronic portal indirectly makes life easier and faster for the public to deal with everyday chores,” she added.

To date, myGovernment Portal provides 1,115 online services.

She explained that myGovernment Portal mainly provided three online services which are information and government related services, and downloading forms.

Normah said people can access government related information through myGovernment Portal.

The information is arranged according to the people’s needs and it is divided into four dedicated groups. They are citizens, entrepreneurs, government and non-citizens.

Normah said the public can access and download 2,892 forms from this portal.

“They can use these forms to deal with the related government agencies, for example, job applications or EPF withdrawal forms.

“myGovernment Portal also provides services such as checking and paying traffic fines from the police and the Road Transport Department.

“The portal also offers services related to utilities, such as electricity and telephone bills, tax payments for certain local councils such as the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Ipoh City Hall, and Subang Jaya Municipal Council,” she said.

Normah said the public can also check other services like their bankruptcy status via E-Insolvency, and apply for foreign workers or maids.

She said the portal also enables the public to submit complaints online.

“Jobs Malaysia offers the public to seek information about job vacancies from the government and private sector”.

Normah said the portal is one of the government’s efforts to increase the efficiency and reliability of the services offered by the government to other government sectors, businesses, and the public.

On the awareness of the public to use the online e-government facilities, she said MAMPU together with other Government agencies have organised promotional activities by having exhibitions in strategic locations such as shopping malls, conducted seminars, launch electronic media advertisements, billboards and distributed pamphlets and brochures.

Since 2007, a series of 20 such promotions were held and MAMPU have planned for 10 more programmes this year, said Normah.

She said these promotions are conducted to educate and create awareness among the public about the ICT initiative by the government agencies and the EG.

She said it also encourages the public to use the EG facilities which makes it easier for them to deal with government agencies online.

She added that the portal is known as the “common gateway”, or simply put; a “one stop centre”.

“It makes it easier for the public to deal with the government even when they do not know the name and address of a particular government website which offers the required services.

“It is in-line with the government’s concept to create one government, many agencies,” she added.

The portal has been visited by over 2.5 million visitors since January 2009 with an average of 14,385 hits per day.

The agencies are also asked to provide more online based services to the public.

“MAMPU has also developed e-KL which is intended to improve online services by government agencies within the Klang Valley,” she added.
