  • Qatar, ICANN sign MOU on supporting cooperation in Internationalized Domain Names

    Qatar represented by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the High-Level Government Meeting at ICANN's 50th Public Meeting in London, which continues until Thursday, June 26.

    The MOU, signed by H.E. Dr. Hessa Al-Jaber, Minister of Information and Communications Technology and Fadi Chehadé, President of ICANN, focuses on all involved parties agreeing to cooperate with the overall aim of supporting the development of the domain name industry and Internationalized Domain Names (such as those in Arabic script) in the region, as well as to promote the multi-stakeholder model of Internet Governance.

  • Qatar: ‘Snag’ hits renewal of health card online

    What seems to be a technical glitch is preventing some subscribers of Qatar e-Government from renewing the health cards of their dependants online.

    “If I could hitherto get the health cards of my family members renewed in just 24 hours, I had to wait for one month this year as the e-Government portal did not accept the applications,” an aggrieved user told Gulf Times yesterday.

  • Qatar: 100,000 people to use ICT to access govt services by next year: Official

    By the end of next year, 100,000 people will be using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to access government document services such as traffic tickets and exit permits, predicted Wajdi Matar, Planning and Institutional Relations Manager of ictQATAR.

    ictQATAR's Advisory Council concluded their third-quarter meeting yesterday. "The meeting was a platform for ictQATAR's management to engage in constructive discussions with renowned experts in ICT," said Matar.

  • Qatar: 131 services to go online under e-govt

    Residents and business establishments in Qatar will be able to access a total of 131 services through the country's e-government project in a phased manner, Dr Ahmed Al Mohannadi, the project director said yesterday. Since its launch on September 3, 2000, a total of 50,000 Residence Permits were renewed through the e-government facility provided by the postal department, generating a revenue of QR6m, he added.
  • Qatar: 62 young nationals help to enhance e-government services

    The ideas and inputs of 62 young Qatari nationals will be incorporated into key projects for the development of e-government services, an official said.

    The management of the e-government project an ambitious plan which aims to turn the country's administration from manual to electronic selected 180 proposals of 62 Qatari nationals involved in a four-day project.

    "We have received amazing inputs and excellent ideas from the participants," said Mai Al Mansour, administration and finance manager of the e-government.

  • Qatar: A milestone for e-govt online transactions

    The Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR) has presented United Readymix an award for conducting the one millionth transaction on Qatar’s e-Government website.

    The website provides businesses and individuals with access to various government services, such as applications for exit permits, driving licences and visas, as well as providing online payment options for traffic violations.

  • Qatar: Afkar to design Finance Ministry website

    Afkar Information Technology (AIT) and the Ministry of Finance yesterday signed a contract to develop an advanced, bi-lingual website for the ministry.

    "This project is part of the e-government initiative started in 2000 under the auspices of HH Sheikh Jassem bin Hamad Al Thani. The finance ministry plans to use the latest in Internet technology to provide the best quality of services to people," an AIT spokesman said.

  • Qatar: After smart ID, elections to go electronic

    Following the introduction of biometric passports in May for nationals, the next step is expected to be electronic voting and e-elections as the country makes rapid technological strides towards full e-governance.

    Colonel Saleh Ghanim Al Kubaisi, Director of the Information Systems Department at the Ministry of Interior, told The Peninsula yesterday: "Hopefully, this will happen." Voting, in the Central Municipal Council polls, for example, is carried out using slips of ballots.

  • Qatar: Birth certificates for newborns now available online

    Expatriates and nationals can now apply for birth certificates of their newborns online accessing the website www.e.gov.qa. The department of e-government yesterday inserted an advertisement in an Arabic daily informing the public about the electronic facility.
  • Qatar: Broadband for all top priority for ictQATAR

    The Supreme Council for Information and Communication Technology-ictQATAR- is seeking to execute the Most Connected Nation initiative to provide accessibility to all members of the society using the most advanced technologies, said its secretary general Dr Hessa Al Jaber.

    She was speaking at a function held at the Ritz Carlton on Thursday which marked the launch of the new body.

  • Qatar: Building permits to be available online

    Building permits in Qatar would be available online soon that would help cut red tapes and cope with the extremely high construction rate in the country, Qatar e-Government Director, Dr Ahmed Hamad al Mohannadi said here yesterday.

    Al Mohannadi said the platform is under construction having reached the second of its three development phases, noting that such service will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

  • Qatar: Call to use e-govt services

    Interior Ministry officials have urged local establishments to avail of the e-Government services, which they said save time and efforts considerably. For services such as renewal of residence permit and visas, company officials or individuals need not visit the Immigration Department. They can be done by applying on-line, they told a seminar held at the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Sunday.

    Colonel Saleh al-Kubaisi, Director of IT Information System Unit at the ministry, told some 150 company representatives that at present only 7% of the total visas were issued through the e-Government system.

  • Qatar: Decree gives boost to e-govt programme

    In what is seen as a major boost to ictQATAR’s e-government programme, HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has issued a decree establishing the ‘i-Gov Sponsor Group’.

    The group will be chaired by HH the Heir Apparent, who is also chairman of the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology.

    The group will include the Minister of Economy and Commerce, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Civil Service Affairs and Housing, the Minister of State for Interior, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture, and ictQATAR secretary general.

  • Qatar: Delays plague health-card renewal through e-government

    Gone are the days when one could renew the health card online through Qatar e-government and collect it from the Health Card Office of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) after just 24 hours.

    “Now, you have to wait for at least three days,” an expatriate, who has been availing of the facility without any delays for the past three years, told Gulf Times yesterday.

    Plans are afoot to soon issue building permits through the e-government, according to a senior official handling the electronic services project.

    The development would ensure that the building permits are issued without unprecedented delays, said acting director of the e-government project, Hashim Al Sada.

    Addressing a press conference yesterday, he said his department was presently coordinating with 13 government bodies to make the above service available.

  • Qatar: E-government's boost to services highlighted

    The positive changes in the working of various departments in Qatar following the implementation of the e-government programme were highlighted at a press breifing at the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) headquarters yesterday.

    Kahramaa's acting manager for human resources Abdulatif Khalid al-Mana noted that there has been a significant change in the corporation's functioning after its signing of an agreement with the e-government department.

  • Qatar: E-govt project introduces online Zakat payment

    The ambitious e-government project in Qatar, envisaged by the Emir, H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has added another service to its array: the electronic payment of Zakat and Sadaqat.

    The Zakat Fund channel allows the user to choose the type of Zakat and/or Sadaqat donations he or she wishes to make with the specified amount for each and to pay their donations electronically.
