  • Qatar launches smart ID cards

    Qataris can now avail of several services offered by smart ID cards, officially launched yesterday. Expatriates are expected to benefit from the same services by next year, an official said.

    Addressing a press conference at the Immigration and Travel Documents Department, IT Department director Col Saleh Khamis al-Kobeisi said the smart card was introduced as a part of the interior ministry’s strategy to adopt the hi-tech programmes of security and to improve the services offered to nationals and expatriates.

  • Qatar leads the region in Network Readiness Index

    Qatar has occupied 23rd position, jumping five steps compared to last year, to lead the Arab world in the Network Readiness Index (NRI), according to INSEAD's 12th annual Global Information Technology Report (GITR) released yesterday.

    The index (NRI) examines the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) to drive economic productivity and social development in 144 countries.

  • Qatar making steady progress in ICT sector

    On the second day of the 1st GCC e-Government Conference currently being held in the Omani Capital of Muscat, proceedings of the event continue to discuss challenges facing eGovernment in the GCC countries.

    Today a panel comprising the GCC ICT leaders was held under the title "How to Overcome eGovernment Challenges". The panel was chaired by Mr. Richard Kerby, Senior Inter-Regional Advisor on eGovernment, UNDESA; and included Engineer Ahmad Al-Kuwari, i-Gov Program Manager at ictQATAR, H.E Ali Mohamed Al-Shuraidah, Director General of the Central Agency for Information Technology in Kuwait, and Dr. Salim Sultan Al-Ruzaiki, CEO of Information Technology Authority in Oman.

  • Qatar Ministry's call to go digital for enhanced govt service

    The new teaching staff of Texas A & M University-Qatar were introduced to the digital government services available online, at an awareness workshop organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) jointly with TAMUQ last week.

    Representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Education and Higher Education and Public Health also attended the induction workshop, which came within the framework of implementing the Qatar Digital Government 2020 Strategy and nationwide digital transformation plans.

    Digital technologies provide new and innovative ways for businesses to reach their sustainability goals. Qatar is moving towards digital technology and fostering innovative solutions to accelerate its digital transformation.

    Speaking to The Peninsula, Fida Khalil, Senior Vice President, Digital Industries, Siemens Qatar, said ”For this year our focus is on oil and gas and what is being done at the innovation level. We are having a strong focus on digital transformation and working with partners like Microsoft, Ooredoo and MCIT to see how we can bring value to the industrial sector.   • Qatar national ID programme to use biometrics

    Qatar is the latest Middle Eastern country to announce plans for a smart card and biometric-based national ID system, known as the Qatar National Identification Project.

    Suppliers to the project include Qatar Project Group International (QPGI) and ProtechT, as well as Axalto, the sole supplier of the cards, associated readers and services; Precise Biometrics, which is providing fingerprint biometric match-on-card technology; and Daon, which is supplying its core biometric infrastructure product, DaonEngine, and finger, face and iris biometric snap-in interfaces to biometric matching algorithms.

  • Qatar on fast track to digital transformation: IT minister

    The government is keen on maintaining the acceleration of Qatar’s digital transformation, HE the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohamed bin Ali bin Mohamed al-Mannai said Wednesday at the opening ceremony of Smart City Expo Doha 2022, being held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani.

    The two-day global forum organised by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), in partnership with Fira de Barcelona, is being held at Msheireb Downtown Doha, which is hosting smart city experts from more than 60 countries. Held under the theme ‘Sustainable Future of Resilience’, Smart City Expo Doha 2022 has attracted global innovators to the event that has witnessed the unveiling of three smart city projects, which are supported by the Tasmu Accelerator.

  • Qatar pioneer in e-government

    Sheikh Hamad bin Jabr Al Thani exhibited extreme cool and replied convincingly when a Qatari member of the audience criticised the Planning Council and said it had belied the hopes of the common man. Hasan Al Jaffiri launched a tirade against the government and some of its policies. "I was happy when the council was founded but am dejected now," said Al Jaffiri, calling for a bigger role for the private sector in the GCC in industrial development. He also blasted Qatar's e-government project for being slow.
  • Qatar provides new smartphone service for reporting ‘absconding’ workers

    The Qatari Ministry of Interior (MoI) is encouraging employers to submit reports of runaway workers via a new feature on their Metrash2 e-governance service, which can be used on a smartphone.

    This will “save time and effort” and “highlights the MoI’s eagerness to provide quality electronic facilities that help the public avail of services easily and conveniently”  according to a statement on the MoI’s website.

  • Qatar providing top class e-services

    Qatar is now among the top select group of countries that have developed a comprehensive infrastructure for its e-services with the latest in cyber technologies being implemented, Abdulamir Mryhij, ebusiness Practice Manager, GBM-Qatar, said here recently.

    "In the e-services domain, Qatar is definitely one of the top group of countries for the number of e-services provided", Abdulamir said.

  • Qatar ranks 32nd in global IT report

    QATAR is the 32nd “most networked” economy in the world in 2007-2008, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Information Technology Report.

    Qatar climbed four places from 36 in the 2006-2007 ranking.

    Besides Qatar, the United Arab Emirates is the only other GCC country to make it to the top 35.

  • Qatar ranks third in '2016 Online Service Index'

    Qatar has been ranked among the 'top 10 Asian economies' in the ‘Online Service Index’ of the biannual E-Government Development Index (EGDI) released recently by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).

    Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia, was ranked third among GCC states scoring 0.67391.

    On the e-participation index, Qatar was ranked third along with Kuwait, among Gulf countries and 55th globally with a score of 0.6441.

  • Qatar sees rise in e-government service delivery

    The Ministry of Business and Trade (MBT) will be among the first in the country to become fully paperless in 2014 - a clear reflection of Qatar’s success in adapting e-government services.

    Currently, MBT is working towards converting all its paper-based transactional services to be 100% automated by next year, ictQATAR said in its latest newsletter yesterday.

    Many government agencies in Qatar have achieved “good progress” over the past few years in terms of e-government services.

    The project, which is being implemented by ictQatar, will allow for government agencies to be directly linked together over a secure communications platform, enabling improved data sharing and enhanced security for e-services. This bold initiative will ensure the delivery of higher qualities of service for the people of Qatar, and provide a framework for greater innovation across fields such as education, healthcare and online support.

  • Qatar to improve ICT in government services and business

    Qatar is planning to improve further its information and communications technology (ICT) services through a public access government portal, while encouraging the wider use of advanced technological applications by the public in their dealings with the state, business and leisure.

    Qatar has long been a regional leader in promoting the use of ICT in government services, establishing the Supreme Council of Information and Communication Technology (ictQATAR) in 2005 to oversee the development of the country into a fully integrated information-based society.

  • Qatar to issue smart ID cards from next year

    Qatar will start issuing hi-tech biometric smart cards to its residents from the first quarter of 2007 as part of the country’s National Identity Card Project.

    The Interior Ministry has signed a contract to this effect with Axalto and its local sponsor International Trading Group, on the sidelines of the Milipol Qatar 2006 exhibition that concluded in Doha yesterday.

  • Qatar to throw open online medical test registration to all

    The Qatar health ministry’s Medical Commission is planning to throw open online medical test registration to all individuals.

    Presently, the service is restricted to companies. Employees seeking a medical check-up are registered online and appointments are scheduled.

    According to Dr Ibrahim Al Shaar, director, Medical Commission, the department is looking at expanding the service to include more categories in the next two months. In the initial phase, the service would be made available to certain categories of professionals and food handlers. Food handlers or people working with restaurants and similar outlets are required to undergo the tests every year while seeking a renewal of their health certificates.

  • Qatar unveils National ICT Plan 2015

    ictQATAR, the country’s ICT policy and regulatory body, has released a five-year ICT plan that aims to “create a knowledge-based economy that will drive sustainable development and societal benefits for all”.

    The National ICT Plan 2015’s measureable goals are to:

    • Double the ICT sector’s contribution to the national GDP to US$3 billion
    • Double the workforce to 40,000
    • Achieve ubiquitous high-speed broadband access for households and businesses (95 per cent)
    • Achieve mass ICT and internet adoption by all segments of society (90 per cent)
    • Achieve wide accessibility and effectiveness of all key government services (160 online services)

  • Qatar witnesses impressive growth in e-governance

    E-governance readiness in Qatar has witnessed a remarkable improvement during the last couple of years. In a latest international rating, the state has moved to 62nd place from its 80th position in 2004, says a recent index compiled on a report by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs(UNDESA).

    The recently released UNDESA document "Global e-Government Readiness Report 2005 : From e-Government to e-Inclusion" is also full of praise for Qatar's fast pace in online service delivery.
