Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt this morning addressed a National Information Society Advisory Council meeting and presented the government’s set of targets for the country’s 2008-2010 ICT srategy.

Dr Gatt said Malta had come a long way and had managed to attain all the target set in Malta’s first ICT strategy for 2006 and 2007. He said the My Potential scheme was “very successful” in attracting all those who wanted to start a career in the ICT sector.

All Government services, including those which are not used very often, will be accessible online by the year 2010, Minister for Investments, Industry and IT Austin Gatt announced.

The ambitious project will make Malta unique and should place it at the top of the European rankings on e-Government.

e-ID introduced to provide better personalized online government services

The myGov.mt portal has been brushed up to include better accessibility to further e-Government services. Minister Austin Gatt and Parliamentary Secretary Tonio Fenech gave out details about the new services at a press conference on Monday morning.

Malta was described as a fast mover in eGovernment services by the European Commission a few days ago. Considering that last year Malta was already among the leaders of the sector, such a compliment from the EC carries more weight.

A report on eGovernment services in the European Union put Malta in a highly creditable second place, behind Austria. It said that Malta registered substantial qualitative progress in its services and confirmed them as being excellent European models in the field.

IT Minister Austin Gatt said that the government's excellent results in eGovernment were not attained by coincidence or because othe EU member states did not have the capacity to provide excellent eGovernment.

A report issued by the European Commission has placed Malta second in the ranking for the best online services provided by the local government.
