On Friday morning a new system called eDLS was launched which allows drivers to renew their driving licences online. The system was launched on Friday morning conjointly by the Minister for Urban Development and Roads, Jesmond Mugliett and Minister for Investment Industry and Information Technology, Austin Gatt.

This eDLS system aims at enhancing efficiency in services currently offered by the Licensing Department within the Transport Authority (ADT) said Minister Mugliett. It has been developed on the same lines as the eVera system by which one can renew a vehicle’s license online.

As online government services have been increasing over the past seven years, the whole e-Gov brand may now sound more familiar to the man in the street. Frequently-used services, such as paying your fines or renewing your road license, need no introduction. Although not necessarily very lucrative to the exchequer, e-Gov services stand to favour the public with the reduction of queues, less bureaucracy and increased overall efficiency.

Little may be known about the full content and functionality of the services on offer. Chances are you have been using e-Gov services without knowing or that you may have looked for an existing e-Gov service and never found it. Here are a few examples.

In a bid to strengthen the software development and IT consultancy sector, while at the same time enhancing public e-government services, Investments, Industry and Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt yesterday announced a new strategic alliance between the government and 14 Maltese companies.

Of the 14 companies roped into the alliance, 11 are software development companies while the remaining four are software consultancies.

he government has been surprised by the strong public reaction to its offer to subsidise broadband internet access to all those who currently do not have broadband, IT minister Austin Gatt said.

Applications for the subsidised service, which will be provided at just 3 euros per month for a year, will be received on Saturday morning at a fair in Merchants’ Street.

The government has formed an 'e-government alliance' with 14 software development companies to develop and commission 40 new e-government services.

The alliance was announced by IT Minister Austin Gatt who said that the government's ultimate target is for Malta to be the leading European country in the provision of e-government services. It is currently second.
