Two of Malta’s e-Government services have been awarded the Good Practice label in recognition of proven credibility, excellence and scope of research, by the European Commission.

They are the recently revamped customer care system and the highly used vehicle registration and licensing system, Malta Information Technology Agency (MITA) said.

The European Commission’s Digital Competitiveness report published today shows that Europe’s digital sector has made strong progress since 2005: 56% of Europeans now regularly use the internet, 80% of them via a high-speed connection (compared to only one third in 2004), making Europe the world leader in broadband internet.

The report found Malta performs well in the fields of eCommerce, eBusiness and the provision of eGovernment services, and displays a relatively high proportion of eSkills among employees.

Following the 4 e-Government initiatives recently launched, the government announced the launch of the new Online Customer Care System.

The previous Customer Care System was launched in 2002 and provided citizens with a single point of reference for communicating with various Government departments and entities.

Malta is on track to meet the December 28 deadline for the Services Directive – but the chambers of commerce of 40 per cent of member states said their country would miss it.

The Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, responding to the 5th survey carried out by Eurochambres on this topic, said that the Maltese government would meet the deadline but other chambers are expressing a drop in confidence, the first since Eurochambres started to monitor the process.

A new government online customer care system has been launched. It is accessible through www.servizz.gov.mt.

The previous customer care system was launched in 2002 and provided a single point of reference for communicating with various government departments and entities.
