The government is aiming to improve trust in e-commerce and yesterday announced partnership with HSBC Bank under which holders of HSBC debit cards (QuickCash) can now use and transact business related to eGovernment.

Investment Minister Austin Gatt said more people were making financial transactions with the government electronically. While in 2003 there had been over 8,500 transactions on the payment gateway, the number during last year rose to 150,000. This year the number is expected to go up to 250,000.

To widen the trust in electronic services, the government would be introducing the Trust Mark, which would certify that products and services sold on sites having this mark could be relied on. Another initiative would be to provide authenticity to digital signatures.

Dr Gatt said that this step taken by HSBC meant that the two main banks in Malta were processing transactions on eGovernment.

HSBC Chief Executive Officer Shaun Wallis described the bank’s decision as important, even in the light of the launch of eCommerce by HSBC recently. These services had been accepted, and many were making transactions online.
