The Beijing City Government's Information Office and EMC Corp. today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the city government's "Digital Beijing" initiatives. Over the next few years, the city of Beijing will collaborate with EMC to build a state-of-the-art information infrastructure that will ultimately house the city's digital assets. Joseph M. Tucci, chairman, president and CEO of EMC, and Zhao Fengtong, vice mayor of the City of Beijing, hosted today's signing ceremony.

Surveying and mapping is an indispensable fundamental safeguard for the development of economy and society while being fundamental to the construction of infrastructure and facilities, the prospecting, exploitation and utilization of resources, the supervision, prevention and cure for natural hazards, and the protection of ecologic environment. Security services of surveying and mapping are also indispensable for enhancing a country's defensive capacity, maintaining social stability, and improving people's living quality. Practices prove that with economy and society developing, the demand for surveying and mapping becomes greater and the requirement higher. As a result, a brand new geographic information industry has been developing vigorously.

A recent survey carried out among CIOs and IT managers of government agencies in Hong Kong, to determine their views regarding implementing workforce mobility strategy in their agencies in relation to the government’s new scheme of enforcing a '5-Day work week' schedule for civil servants, threw up some interesting results. In response to the government’s environmental protection campaign, and its newest scheme to reduce working hours of civil servants, more than half (57%) of the respondents agreed that implementing workforce mobility IT strategy by providing employees remote access to business-critical data is a must for all companies. On the practical sense, 28.6% of them said this applies well for organisations with branches or remote offices.

The Communist Party of China (CPC)has pledged to build a service-oriented government that provides efficient public administration and better social services to promote "coordinated economic and social development".

"More attention should be attached to public services," says the Resolution of the CPC Central Committee on Major Issues Regarding the Building of a Harmonious Socialist Society, published on Wednesday.

Experts from China and the European Union (EU) converged Thursday in Beijing for the first annual conference of the EU-China Information Society Project which aims to promote Chinese economic and social reform through development of an information society.

The conference focused on topics as development strategy and challenges of the information society in China and the EU.
