ChineseWideWeb statt WorldWideWeb. So lautete die Forderung in den neunziger Jahren, um das Informationsmonopol der Kommunistischen Partei in der Volksrepublik China durch das Internet und den dadurch bedingten Informationsfluss nicht zu gefährden. Doch inzwischen ist das Internet im Reich der Mitte mit über 45 Millionen Usern stark angewachsen. In wenigen Jahren wird es wohl mehr chinesische Webseiten als englische geben.
Internet und E-Commerce boomen in China
In wenigen Jahren wird es nach Einschätzung der Studie "Internetpolitik der Volksrepublik China" mehr chinesische als englische Websites im Internet geben.

Chinas IT-Politik ist widersprüchlich: Einerseits werde das Internet als unerlässlich für eine rasche Modernisierung des Landes angesehen, andererseits will die Führung "negative Einflüsse des Internets auf die politische und gesellschaftliche Stabilität" begrenzen, lautet das vorläufige Fazit eines Forschungsprojekts der Freien Universität Berlin, das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) unterstützt wird.
