The National Institute of Smart Government (NISG) and IBM India have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that marks the beginning of a relationship promoting e-governance at the national level. According to a press release, the MoU represents a significant initiative that will help India to develop different e-government applications using open standards and IBM's e-Governance Frameworks.

IT IS in the nature of our federal polity that major shifts in economic policies at the Centre both necessitate and facilitate follow up action in the States. What has been the response of the States to the "reforms" initiated by the Centre in 1991? While there have been several studies of the Centre's reform activities, there is hardly any that deals with the experience of the States. It is this lacuna that the volume under review aims to rectify.

In a move that may create major revenue potential for Indian IT players, state governments are expected to spend a staggering Rs.150 billion on computerising their operations in the next five years, says a study.

According to the study conducted by the National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom), the launch of e-governance projects has resulted in a significant increase in the IT budgets of state governments.
