An e-Government data centre which is being built will be launched very soon, and will be used in a few months' time, said Deputy Minister of Communications Dato Paduka Awg Haji Yusof bin Hj Abdul Hamid yesterday.

That is where the data will be stored and all the connectivity will be done in the building, he said in response to a question on ICT infrastructure and on data centre during a press conference.

Institute Technology Brunei (ITB) has marked another milestone with the launching of its third e-Government project, "e-RIS" (Electronic Resources and Information Services), which will be used to digitise archive materials at ITB's library.

Prior to the "e-RIS", two other e-Government projects for ITB were implemented namely "Network Engineering Education Resources Implementation" and "Hardware and Software Infrastructure".

A new government department called e-Government National Centre has been formed, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement yesterday.

By command of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister's Office stated that His Majesty has consented to the formation of the new department - "E-Government National Centre".

Starting its operation yesterday, the centre' will provide services in the aspects of operations, acquisition and human resource development in the field of in formation and Communication Technology (ICT), which are related to e-government initiatives especially in the civil service, according to a statement by the Prime Minister's Office.

Over 300 participants attended a five-day seminar to utilise reference materials from online databases, as part of the Ministry of Education's e-government drive to promote electronic resources in local academic institutions.

It is hoped that the use of electronic resources would better help teachers and students to access credible information from peer-reviewed journal articles.
