To ensure the smooth preparation and implementation of the new biometric passport or e-passport by the National Registration and Immigration Department, Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri SetiaAwang Hj Mohd Yusof, the Minister of Home Affairs personally took a closer look at the project in the Department of National Registration and Immigration, yesterday morning.
The new biometric passport or e-passport will be utilised by citizens of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
In the initial stage, the e-passport is being implemented as a pilot project for two months from yesterday (January 26, 2008) and used by the crew of' Royal Brunei Airlines.
The Brunei Darussalam biometric passport is one of the projects initiated by National Registration and Immigration under the Ministry of Home Affairs to replace the machine-readable passport (MRP).
Biometric passport is recognised around the world and it possesses a chip and high-level of security features in line with the standard issued by International Civil Aviation.
It is also hoped that the Brunei Darussalam biometric passport can ease the process of immigration checks during trips and also deter forgery and misuse of passports.
The visit to the Department of National Registration and Immigration by Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Mohd Yusof, the Minister of Home Affairs is part of a series of working visits.
During the visit, the Minister of Home Affairs also scrutinised the IC section, Working Pass, Visa and Visitor's pass, Enforcement Section, National Registration Section and so on.
The minister also spoke with customers at the various sections on the services provided by the department and made a few suggestions to better procedures for the foreign labours section.
He also took a closer look at the computer system of the department, which include border control system, system visa and passes and system migration under the e-government project.
Among the objectives of the working visit is to take a closer look at the administration, management, functions and roles of the departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In addition, the visit also served to interact and listen to any problems faced by the departments.
Also present during the visit was Haji Awang Md Mandi bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Abd Rahman, the Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs with Awang Zainal Abidin Dato Paduka Hj Ahmad, the Director of National Registration and Immigration.
