Customer Service in Brunei Darussalam's public sector is at several different stages of development, but strong marketing may be needed for the government to succeed in selling the concept of treating citizens as valuable customers to civil servants.

David Abberton, chief executive officer of BAG Networks and secretary of the Infocom Federation Brunei, commented that quite few parts of the e-government infrastructure was in place, such as the networks, network, websites and ready availability of information online, as well as some transactional services.

"Public Services, as the pulse of the country's administration, must always play its role in fulfilling needs towards the stabilisation of peace, -prosperity and harmony for the people and residents of Brunei."

This was stated by Dato Paduka Hj Kamis Hj Tamin, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, as guest of honour for the 14th Celebration of Tutong's Public Services 2007, which was held yesterday at the Seri Kenangan Hall in the district. He added that efficient services could generate growth and development for the Sultanate's economy. A stable development relies on the machinery of the Public Services, which can meet the community's requirements and hopes.

In order to satisfy the needs of the public, the civil service should be flexible and adaptive towards changes.

This observation was made by the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR), Dato Paduka Hj Mohammad Hamid bin Hj Mohammad Jaafar, during a ceremony to mark Civil Service Day in Belait District.

The emergence of Health Information Technology or e-Health has prompted the Ministry of Health to explore the possibilities of its implementation in a bid to further improve Brunei Darussalam's health care services.

Bilateral trade between Brunei Darussalam and the Republic of Korea surpassed US$1 billion last year, according to Korean Ambassador My Hwng Won Kon who spoke during last night's dinner reception to mark the National Foundation Day of Korea at the Empire Hotel and Country Club.

It is hoped that once the free trade agreement comes into force, bilateral trade between the two countries will continue to he diversified and expanded, the Korean ambassador added.
