Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to take advantage of online business facilitation services in a bid to further develop the country's economy.

Dyg Masni Hj Mohsin, Acting Director of Brunei Industrial Development Authority (BINA) said that local SMEs could further enhance and achieve competitiveness and the viability of their business through eBINA which is part of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources eGovernment initiative.

Management experts from two foreign consultancies said using information technology (IT) with business concepts would ensure the common outcome of service delivery across an entire organisation.

Senior professionals from the management consultancy firm Quint Wellington Redwood Asia, Asia-Pacific, Japan and the Middle East, and IT management software provider CA Malaysia told The Brunei Times that marrying IT and business concepts, rather than merely aligning them, would be an effective step for organisations.

Foreign investors will now have the convenience of applying for business licences through the eMIPR, the online business facilitation service of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

"This `Single Window' or online business facilitation web service provides easy access to services of the ministry and the departments under it, and it is hoped this will attract foreign investors to set up businesses in the sultanate," MIPR's Chief Information Officer Hj Zaini Madaros said at the soft launch of eMIPR website www.bruneimipr.gov.bn.

The Public Works Department's customer service drive has received yet another shot in the arm with the unveiling of a project to implement an electronic billing system for water utilities.

The Water Services Department under Public Works will be collaborating with local IT solutions provider ZNet Technologies on the installation and maintenance of the eBilling Integrated System (eBIS). The system will enable workers responsible for reading water meters to issue utility bills to the respective consumers on site, thus improving on the efficacy of current billing procedures. The department hopes to improve its service delivery by facilitating the middleman process in data gathering and reducing response time.

Brunei's Immigration and National Registration Department will become the third Asean country to implement biometric features in travel documents following the signing of an agreement contract yesterday for two projects.

The move is in line with the standard issued by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
