Sri Lanka's Government Information Centre (GIC) call centre, a part of the e-Sri Lanka initiative, is being used as a "digital intermediary" by citizens that are usually categorised as being at the "bottom of the pyramid" in terms of their earnings.

These people are said to favour calling GIC's 1919 telephone number for information on access train schedules, foreign employment opportunities, crop prices, etc. It has also resulted in GIC having received over 5 million calls so far, including 1.3 million calls in total in 2010 and 1.5 million calls expected by end-2011, according to Wasantha Deshapriya, the Programme Head for the Re-engineering Government unit at Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), the organisation overseeing GIC.

Sri Lanka Telecom launched the i-Sri Lanka project for ultra speed broadband network under its nationwide network modernization initiative. The total project investment is estimated to be Rs. five billion.

The first phase of this project I Sri Lanka was launched in Jaffna yesterday with an investment of Rs. 70 million which is considered to be the largest ICT project in Jaffna.

The regional telecommunication office and maintenance centre in Jaffna were also opened yesterday to provide and ensure speedy and quality service delivery.

A new programme called ‘the Lanka Gate e-Services Project’ initiated by the Information Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) will introduce selected online services to several government institutions to check details of Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts and reserve vehicle numbers.

The Labour Department intends making available comprehensive citizen services where employees will have easy round-the-clock access to EPF-related information such as account balance details and refund status details.

Aims to broaden ICT horizons to revolutionise lifestyles of Sri Lankans

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) launched its ultra high speed broadband network yesterday under its nation-wide network modernisation project i-Sri Lanka . This is the largest ICT project in Jaffna alongside the opening of the SLT Regional Telecommunication Office and Maintenance Centre in Jaffna.

The i-Sri Lanka network modernisation project is set to revolutionise broadband access across the country, by upgrading the existing copper based access network with fibre optics. This will enable customers to enjoy the consistent, uninterrupted high speed internet services delivered on the network, up to high speeds up to 20 mega bytes per second and more.

Fanning the flame of speculation regarding an electronic voting system for Sri Lankans, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga publicly stated last week that the Government planned to introduce such a system in a bid to promote "democratic engagement" among citizens.

Making this comment as the keynote speaker at a recent event on electronic governance, the two-day FutureGov Forum Sri Lanka 2011, which was held in Colombo; he also asserted that the "whole idea of expediting government processes is to save time of citizens.
