The Government has given top priority to promote information technology among people, especially the rural community to enable Sri Lanka to emerge as a knowledge based economy. The development depends on acquiring knowledge and technology is necessary to forge ahead, said Minister of Science and Technology Prof. Tissa Vitharana.

Asia’s premier ICT event e-Asia 2009, the fourth in the series was opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the BMICH yesterday. It was jointly organized by the Information Technology Communication Agency (ICTA) and Centre for Science Development and Media Studies under the theme “Opportunities for Digital Asia”. The three-day Information and Communication Technology event of the region for the year includes a conference and exhibition which will conclude tomorrow.

Sri Lankans can now compete for national honours for "creative ICT applications", according to a statement by Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). With entries accepted until September 15, the inaugural "e-Swabhimani", or "e-Social Excellence", awards programme is open to individuals, groups and institutions.

Also, according to ICTA’s e-Society Programme Head, Chitranganie Mubarak, the competition offers eight categories to compete in: e-Government and Institutions, e-Health and Environment, e-Learning and Education, e-Entertainment and Games, e-Culture and National Heritage, e-Science and Technology, e-Business and Commerce, and e-Inclusion and Participation.

Information Technology (IT) will play a major role in the economic development in Sri Lanka as 75 percent of the Government institutions including Ministries, Departments, Provincial Councils, Pradeshiya Sabhas and Divisional Secretaries have been connected to a cohesive network that enables an efficient service to the public, Chief Operating Officer Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) Reshan Dewapura said at the launch of the e-Asia 2009, Asia’s most prestigious international exhibition and conference in Colombo yesterday.

The Colombo District Secretariat commenced another e-governance program by issuing Grama Niladhari (GN) certificates for the residents in the district.

This new service will enable people to quickly get GN certificates that are needed for various purposes to prove their place of residence.

The Colombo district is ahead of other districts in using ICT for governance and this program will cover the whole district by 2012, Colombo Government Agent G. A. J. Sylvester told the Sunday Observer.

Remember the good old days, when we want to get a service from a government department, feeling that comes to our mind is not very encouraging. Most of the people in this country have experienced that in the recent past and even now to a certain extent.

That has been one of the crucial factors for the citizens to stick to private sector products and services as much as they can. There are many instances that we face difficulties in finding the correct person who handles the matters and most of the time people send from pillar to post when it comes to documentation. People are getting lost in the process and ultimately waste money to get things done.
