As the call heightens, for governments and businesses in Nigeria to better deploy Information Technology applications for economic growth, local and foreign industry associations have come together in a pact aimed at implementing this objective.

To this effect, the Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN) and the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) have joined hands with the World Information Technology Services Alliance (WITSA) and formed a Government Advisory Group (GAG) to give impetus to the implementation of IT development strategies across the nation.

Mobile broadband technology, could help developing economies leapfrog economic and other divides by facilitating the deliverables of government. The Federal Government has been challenged to consult more seriously with the private sector, sharpen its policy and implementation frameworks and encourage the roll out of infrastructure, so as to take advantage of technology in leaping over the ongoing global economic meltdown.

To promote transparency in governance in its expenditure and income, the Bayelsa State Government has inaugurated a Multi-Stakeholders Working Group (BSWG). It also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Revenue Watch Institute (RWI), to ensure a smooth process. Abimbola Akosile and Yemi Babalola analyse a vital initiative, which is capable of curbing restiveness in a resource-rich but volatile region.

Intercontinental Bank Plc has secured the mandate to manage all Kwara State e-payments accounts. A statement signed by Emeka Aneato said this development is coming on the heels of the deployment the bank's Verve card, which is the most secured e-payment technology, the first and only such card presently in Nigeria.

Earlier Benue State Government, Kaduna Petrochemical and Refining Company and some Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies have signed on Intercontinental Bank for the e-payment system in line with the latest drive by government towards transparency and effectiveness in revenue collection and management of public finance.

The Cross River State Government has approved contracts worth about N260 million for the extensive renovation and upgrading of its Information Technology (IT) network infrastructure.

Mr. Odo Effiong, the state special adviser, ICT Department, said under this initiative, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in Calabar would be equipped with standard Local Area Networks which would be connected to a fibre optic Metropolitan Area Network, adding that this will be driven by world class switches and routers from Cisco Systems.
