The current global economic crisis has made strong case for the implementation of e-Government in local governments and other tiers of government in the country, Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Alhassan Zaku, has said.

Zaku, who spoke at the opening session of the National e-Government Summit on eEnabled Local Government Administration in Abuja on Tuesday, said e-Government would eliminate waste in all tiers of government.

The minister, represented by the Director-General, National Information Technology Development Agency, Prof. Cleopas Angaye, said the role of local governments in transforming the Nigerian economy could not be overemphasised.

He said, “The term, economic meltdown, used for the present global economic crisis, is a distinctively technological expression normally used for severe overheating of the core of a nuclear reactor resulting in the core melting and radiation escaping; the consequences are needless to say, catastrophic for the immediate environment and outlying areas.

“This is the time we most require the benefits of the far-reaching potential of e-Government to ensure greater engagement with citizens, higher productivity in terms of reduced costs, more efficient administrative procedures, delivery of higher quality services and provision of better policy outcomes.”
