The Nigerian government has finalized plans to create a central database for its 774 local government councils, an initial step in building a common electronic platform to drive e-government services such as electronic tax collection, national passport procurement and utility payments.

The government will execute the eLocal Government Administration (eLGA) project in phases in collaboration with National eGovernment Strategies (NeGSt), a public-private partnership.

Students and teachers nationwide can now access digital content, based on the national curriculum for learning and teaching basic Mathematics and science, free. This has been made possible by a portal, recently launched by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Intel Corporation in Abuja. Bukola Olatunji was there.

The Nigerian Internet Group has urged the Federal Government to step up the e-Government initiative to promote accountability and transparency in governance.

The President of the group, Mr. Lanre Ajayi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Abuja on Tuesday that e-Government would simplify delivery of services to citizens and eliminate bottlenecks in government business.

The Managing Director, Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, has stressed the need for Commonwealth member states to embrace information communications technologies to bridge the poverty gap.

He disclosed this in a statement on Friday, while commenting on the benefits of upcoming CTO ICT summit taking place ion Abuja next month.
