The Managing Director, Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, has stressed the need for Commonwealth member states to embrace information communications technologies to bridge the poverty gap.

He disclosed this in a statement on Friday, while commenting on the benefits of upcoming CTO ICT summit taking place ion Abuja next month.

According to him, “These are exciting times for Commonwealth countries. Information technology has become a powerful tool for development and advancement of national objectives. Commonwealth member states must as a matter of necessity embrace ICTs and use them to bridge the poverty gap in the region.

“For now and the foreseeable future, ICTs have become the tools for e-health, e-education, e-government, e-commerce. So, Galaxy Backbone is an enthusiastic partner and will play a leading role.”

Ilukwe also commended the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organsation, Federal Ministry of Information and Communications and the Nigerian Communications Commission, organisers of the summit.

He added that the event would be an opportunity to further demonstrate Federal Government’s appreciation of the role of ICTs in the socio-economic development of the country and the commitment to fast-track the country’s uptake of the benefits of the digital revolution going on the world over.

According to him, there is a significant alignment between the theme of this year’s event, ‘Ensuring Effective Connectivity for a Socially Inclusive and Commercially Vibrant Africa,” and Galaxy Backbone mission of drivingt national development through the provision of infrastructure and services to public institutions, underserved communities and other stakeholders.

The event presents an avenue for mainstreaming Galaxy Backbone’s key messages of delivering on the concept of e-government through its 1-Gov.net platform, which is a common government–wide platform for the provision of network and other transversal services for the Federal Government MDAs.

The reality of its NICEP Network, a nation-wide network infrastructure platform for the attainment of MDGs that will enable digital inclusion of underserved communities and hard-to-reach areas of the country by delivering e-education, e-health, e-agriculture and e-government solutions.
