The Government Information Technology Officers (GITO) Council says it will help municipalities improve service delivery using Information and Communication Technology [ICT].

The GITO council was approved by Cabinet to serve as an ICT coordination and consolidation vehicle to inform government when and how to intervene in the interest of enhanced service delivery to citizens.

It comprises chief information officers (CIOs) from national and provincial government departments.

The use of WiFi has long been touted as an important ingredient to solving South Africa’s telecommunication woes, and the Knysna project proves that this technology can live up to its promise.

This ‘UniFi’ project, a partnership between between UniNet and the Knysna municipality, has proven to be very effective in reducing municipal telecommunication spending, bringing services to the town’s inhabitants at reduced costs and in shrinking the digital divide.

The City of Cape Town, which recently celebrated the success of its Smart Cape Access Project, has now launched the Smart Cape Access Truck – a pilot project designed to bring connectivity to those marginalised areas that do not currently have Internet access.

According to Mymoena Sharif, the Manager of E-Governance for the City of Cape Town, the Smart Cape Access Project was designed to give communities access to the Internet and has reached a significant milestone with approximately 60 000 people receiving free internet access in nearly 100 public libraries around the city.

Pupils, entrepreneurs and the unemployed in poor communities will soon have free internet access when a Smart Cape Access truck comes rolling into their neighbourhoods.

A City of Cape Town initiative, the Mobile Smart Cape Access Unit holds eight computers which will provide 45-minute periods of internet access to anyone needing it.

Der südafrikanische Revenue Service (Sars) hat eine öffentliche Ausschreibung zur Evaluation verschiedener Linux-Desktop-Lösungen bekannt gegeben.

Die Ausschreibung des Sars dient zunächst dem Zweck, interessante Angebote zu den Linux-Desktops verschiedener Hersteller einzuholen. Die ausgewählten Angebote sollen dann in einem Zeitraum von drei Monaten in den Techniklabors des Sars gründlichen Tests in Sachen Performanz usw. unterzogen werden.
