An R18-billion smart and sustainable development that aims to be the most connected precinct in terms of public transport options has begun to take shape in the heart of Gauteng.

MyBroadband visited the site of the Bankenveld District City in March 2026 and found significant early construction activity, including a few tarred roads and water pipes being put in the ground.

The R18-billion development began construction in late 2025. It is being built on land bought from the University of Witwatersrand for R200 million in 2024.

Waterfall City continues to benefit real estate investment trust (REIT) Attacq, which is investing heavily in the city’s future growth.

Touted as a “world-class smart city”, Waterfall City is a collaboration, logistics, retail and residential hub located in Midrand, Gauteng.

The city houses well-known developments like Mall of Africa, the PwC Tower, Deloitte HQ, and Ellipse Waterfall luxury apartments.

The City of Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Tech Company is set to launch its Smart Pole Project on Mpumelelo Street in Slovo Park on Saturday, 7 March 2026.

The metro described the launch as the dawn of a new era of connectivity, safety, and digital opportunity in the informal settlement.

Slovo Park is an informal settlement in the municipality, known for its ongoing, community-driven struggle for land tenure and service delivery.

Public Service and Administration Minister Mzamo Buthelezi will on Monday officially open the 24th National School of Government Public Sector Trainers’ Forum (PSTF) Conference at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Gauteng.

Hosted by the National School of Government (NSG), the two-day conference brings together learning and development practitioners from across the public sector to reimagine how public servants are trained and equipped to deliver on South Africa’s national priorities.
