If Oman continued to move towards eGovernment at the same pace, it would reach the top position in the Gulf region by 2016, from its current middle level rank, Richard Kerby, Senior Inter-Regional Adviser on eGovernment and Knowledge Management of United Nations, said here on Monday.

Citing the soon-to-be-released UN eGovernment Survey Report 2014, Richard Kerby said the countries of the entire Gulf region were moving closer to the ranks of European countries in eGovernment achievements. He said that when the report would be released in the middle of the year, there would be good news for the country. However, he did not divulge the details of the report, which is still awaited.

The introduction of best eGovernment practices and the experience of government and private institutions in Oman on the subject will be discussed at a 3-day symposium here.

The symposium on 'Excellence in eGovernment' begins tomorrow at the Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa. The meet is part of the initiative of the Sultan Qaboos Award for Excellence in eGovernment 2014.

36 government institutions made their way to Comex 2014 with several new technologies, Mobile apps and eServices, to boost the eGovernment Transformation Plan ahead. The government pavilion is receiving a lot of presence and interaction from the visitors. Several government institutions have signed agreements with either the Information Technology Authority (ITA) or some international institutions participating in COMEX 2014. It's an excellent opportunity for companies and individuals to communicate directly with the representatives of those institutions to learn about the latest ICT related ventures, projects and initiatives.

Nationals' machine readable passports will be replaced by ePassports by the end of this year, Royal Oman Police (ROP) officials have confirmed.

"The ROP's special team is working on the project. By the end of this year, the machine readable passports will be replaced with ePassports which cannot be forged," an official at the ROP pavilion in Comex told Times of Oman.

In line with the e-Government Transformation Plan, Muscat Municipality (MM) launched a package of new e-Services at the e.oman stage at the COMEX 2014 Exhibition today during a ceremony held under the patronage of Mohsen bin Mohammed al-Sheikh, Chairman of Muscat Municipality in the presence of Dr. Salim al-Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA.

The package includes different services, namely: transactions services via e-Certification, leases contracts' services, municipal licenses' services, employment services, e-Printing services, and suppliers' registration services.
