UAE's status as a trailblazer in AI and the wellbeing of citizens were the main topics of discussion

Omar bin Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence (AI), on Monday headed the first meeting of the UAE Council for AI, which discussed the council's objectives and role in implementing the UAE Strategy for AI.

The UAE's status as a trailblazer in AI and the wellbeing of citizens were the main topics of discussion at the meeting, which also highlighted issues arising from the advent of AI and its potential role as a strong foundation for excellence-driven future governments.

More and more users are visiting the UAE government portal, which had about three million visits in total by mid-March 2018 and the number of portal page views of six million.

The official portal’s increase in number of visits has doubled seven times in almost a year since its launch in April 2014.

The UAE Cabinet has adopted the formation of the ‘UAE Council for Artificial Intelligence’ to ensure the implementation of these technologies in various sectors.

The move aims to serve the UAE Government’s objectives, and improve the quality of life of citizens and residents in order to achieve the vision of the UAE 2021 and make the UAE one of the best countries in the world by 2071.

The federal government revenue collected through e-Dirham reached AED 11,809,743,485.64 in 2017, compared to AED 7,841,212,059.41 in 2016 – representing a 51% increase.

The number of service transactions completed through the e-Dirham system amounted to 51,509,666 transactions in 2017, while the total number of receipts reached 22,625,472 in 2017. The total number of e-Dirham cards issued amounted to 3,135,518 during Q4 2017 compared to 2,413,794 cards in Q4 2016, representing a 30% increase.

The Department of e-Government of the Government of Sharjah is undertaking a number of initiatives to inculcate a spirit of innovation and love of technology in students in the Emirate from an early age, encouraging them to choose Information Technology and programming as a major and as a future career.

The Department of e-Government (Ded) has been conducting an exciting interactive workshop for school students at the ongoing UAE Innovation Month in Sharjah celebrations being held from Feb.15 to 21 at Al Majaz Waterfront and Sharjah Centre for Astronomy and Space Sciences in the University City.
