UAE cities secure leading positions in 2026 IMD smart city rankings
Dubai and Abu Dhabi have secured leading global positions in the 2026 Smart City Index published by the International Institute for Management Development, highlighting the UAE’s rapid digital transformation and high urban quality of life.
Dubai ranked sixth globally, while Abu Dhabi placed tenth among 148 cities assessed, underscoring the country’s growing prominence in smart urban development. Zurich topped the global ranking, followed by Oslo, Geneva, London and Copenhagen.

Yas Island, Abu Dhabi’s flagship entertainment and tourism hub, has begun deploying interactive smart city infrastructure with the installation of the first two Citix Tom Smartboards at the island’s main entrance points, positioning the destination as a pilot site for a new phase of the emirate’s digital transformation.
Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) issued 8,385 no-objection certificates (NOCs) for roadworks, excavation and construction projects across various areas of Sharjah city in 2025.
The certificates covered both new and existing projects requiring the connection, modification, or upgrading of electricity, water, gas, and fibre-optic networks.
