The Sultanate has become one of the leading countries of the world in the area of information and communication technologies related services and is growing further in the area, said Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, chief executive officer of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), on Saturday.

Speaking at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2011 event held at Hotel Grand Hyatt, he said there has been considerable focus on improving the information and communication technology services in the Sultanate over the years. He said that the recent data proves that the Sultanate has not only improved its services it has also consolidated its position in the area.

Oman’s drive to be a ‘Digital Society’ has received a fillip with Muscat Municipality (MM) announcing plans to soon offer several services through its website and smartphones.

E-services to be introduced will include tenancy agreement and its renewal and payment of parking fees and fines; several more will be added at a later stage, Muscut Municipality officials said.

Mohammed bin Salim Al Braiki, Deputy Director at the Information Technology Department, said the new move would enhance quality and speed of services provided by the municipality to the level of those currently offered by other government organisations in the country.

Oman has fared well in the Global Information Technology Report for 2010-11, published by the World Economic Forum to evaluate countries’ performances in IT and related issues. The sultanate was placed 41st in the Networked Readiness Index (NRI), among 138 countries.

The annual Global IT Report remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of information communications technologies (ICTs) on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

The NRI, featured in the report, ex-amines how prepared countries are to use ICT effectively across three component sub-indexes: the general business, regulatory, and infrastructure environment; the readiness of the three key stakeholder groups in a society: individuals, businesses, and governments to use and benefit ICT; and the actual usage of the latest ICTs available.

Aiming to provide e-services in order to improve its efficiency, Muscat Municipality is set to launch a number of online facilities, including the sale of parking coupons, payment of fines for parking violations and renewal of rent contracts.

The facilities will be launched during a special event on the sidelines of COMEX, which will be attended by H E Eng Sultan bin Hamdoon al Harthy, the chairman of Muscat Municipality, on Wednesday.

The Sultanate has moved ahead in terms of the emphasis governments place on ICT's role in enhancing development process and future visions, it was reported in the Global Information Technology Report 2010-2011 released by the World Economic Forum and business school for the world in governments' adopting and implementing ICT advances for increased growth and development.

With coverage of 138 economies worldwide, the report is the world's most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.
