Oman’s progress in the use of information communication technology has received global recognition with the United Nations biannual eGovernment Survey 2012 ranking the sultanate 16th in the world on the United Nations eParticipation Index.

The index indicates how governments create an environment in which citizens can be more active and supportive of their governments.

Oman also recorded good improvement in terms of online citizen and business services indices. The country’s ranking for eServices this year is at 35 compared to 55 in the 2010 Report.

The Sultanate came 16th on the world level in the electronic participation criteria at the E-Government Survey published by the UN under the theme United Nations E-Government Survey 2012 E-Government for the People.

The report pointed out to the growth made by the Sultanate in the field of e-government, as well as the successful policies adopted by the government in this field which helped the Sultanate to get this rank, 18 positions better compared to 2010. The Sultanate came sixth on the Arab level in the same report

Working hours of Civil Status personnel, both morning and evening shifts, have been increased.

Lt.Col Ali bin Saif Al Marboey, assistant director general of civil status, said that this decision was taken due to the increasing pressure of work since the start of this year.

The Civil Status Department has also been activated in the wilayats of Ibri and Buraimi, apart from the wilayats of Seeb, Sohar, Rustaq, Nizwa, Salalah and Sur.

The e-Participation index is indicative on how governments develop an environment in which citizens can be more active and supportive of their governments.

There is also good improvement in terms of online citizen and business services indices, which show that the Omani Government and the Information Technology Authority (ITA) policies are yielding results. The ranking for e-Services this year is at 35 compared to its position of 55 in the 2010 Report.

The technical advisory agreement of the General Authority of Manpower Register that was signed by the ITA with PriceWaterhouseCoopers aims to document and assess the current procedures in the authority, suggest new future plans to enhance the procedures, provide a comprehensive review of the basic infrastructure of the programmes and devices and prepare a technical future infrastructure in accordance with the national strategy of Oman Digital Community and e-Government.

The project mainly seeks to establish a comprehensive electronic system to manage the works of the national manpower and to meet the needs of the market in an easy technical way in co-operation with the different institutions. It is worth mentioning that the General Authority of Manpower Register was established by the Royal Decree No 98/2011 to issue a clear database of national manpower and to reinforce the planning of developing the human resources.
