The Sultanate of Oman maintained its position as 40th in the world according to the World Economic Forum's annual Global Information Technology Report 2013. The report examines 54 key indicators including individual, business and government usage, infrastructure, affordability, industry skills and the socio-economic impacts of information technology services.

Oman ranks fifth in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) as the ICT industry continues to develop rapidly across the region, behind Qatar, the highest-ranked MENA country at 23rd, United Arab Emirates (25th), Bahrain (29th) and Saudi Arabia (31st). The report notes that: 'Gulf Co-operation Council states have sharply improved their overall performances and have continued their investments to make ICT one of the key national industries that attempt to diversify and transform their economies'. This is reflected in Oman's global ranking.

Ensuring security is one of the major challenges for the smooth implementation of e-government services and Information Technology Authority (ITA) has taken several measures to address these issues, said a senior official of ITA yesterday. Addressing the first enterprise IT security and compliance seminar here yesterday, Dr Bader Al Mantheri of ITA said that there are technical and non-technical challenges.

He said ITA has set up Oman Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Oman CERT) to get international and regional cooperation and create security awareness within the country. In order to enhance IT security capability, Oman CERT has taken several initiatives and provides services to both public and private sectors.

Dr Ali bin Masoud al Suaniady, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Board Chairman of Information Technology Authority, yesterday confirmed an electronic linkage among the ministries of commerce and industry, manpower and regional municipalities and water resources and the Muscat Municipality. The move is based on directives from the Council of Ministers regarding e-government.

Speaking to reporters following the launch of the second package of One-Station e-Trade Services at Comex exhibition being held at Oman International Exhibition Centre, the minister said that at least two countries are vying to acquire the tender for electronic transformation of services which he expects to be floated during the coming two months.

The Information Technology Authority (ITA) in Oman and Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) of Singapore recently strengthened their collaboration in infocomm technology (ICT) for the education sector in Oman through a joint e-Education seminar, which was held alongside Comex 2013 ICT expo.

The e-Education seminar was aimed at offering an information platform on how technology can support academic approaches and enrich the learning environment for students and teachers, a press release said.

The Supervisory Committee at the Ministry of Manpower yesterday held a meeting under the chairmanship of Shaikh Abdullah bin Nasser al Bakri, Manpower Minister, to assess the latest developments in the implementation of the e-Government plan for the Ministry. The Information Technology Authority (ITA) gave a presentation on the basic stages of the project"s implementation. The Technical Team also gave a presentation on the Ministry"s plan to shift to electronic services according to the plan of the Council of Ministers which has several stages.
