Procedures for issuing visas, especially for businessmen and tourists, and residence permits for expatriates will be simplified when a new electronic system comes into force shortly. It will also ease entry and exit procedures at the border checkpoints.

An agreement for implementing the new ‘electronic visa system’, touted as ‘highly efficient and modern’ by officials, was signed here on Sunday between the Royal Oman Police (ROP) and the Information Technology Authority (ITA).

Ali bin Masoud Al Sunaidi, Commerce and Industry Minister and ITA Chairman, in remarks after signing the deal with Lieutenant-General Hassan bin Mohsen Al Shraiqi, Inspector-General of Police and Customs, and Australia’s SITA Corporation, said the move was in line with the country’s e-governance drive.

“The agreement will open wider horizons for the business and tourism sectors in the sultanate,” he said, also praising ROP for its efforts to provide electronic services to the public.
