Secretary-general of the National Economy Ministry Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi said once the project was carried out, the sultanate would boast one of the latest telecom infrastructures in the world.
“The sultanate is always keen to enhance the e-government infrastructure and keep pace with the latest developments in the telecommunications field,” he added, noting that telecommunications now played an important role in socio-economic development and “add value to life of citizens and residents in the country.”
Khusaibi, who is also the Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), said the new fibre optic network for the Muscat governorate would play an important role in supporting the national economy by providing broadband communication services. This, in turn, would develop e-commerce by providing permanent communication channels for investors and businessmen, he pointed out.
It will also enable licensed telecom operators in the country to develop their services, “especially those related to broadband used in transferring and exchanging electronic data,” Khusaibi said. Other major beneficiaries, he added, would include schools and universities and the health sector.
“The network will facilitate the management of security and surveillance and provide many new services for houses, such as Internet, high definition TV and other services with e-content in the future,” he said.
