Transforming Government since 2001
The Sultanate has become one of the leading countries of the world in the area of information and communication technologies related services and is growing further in the area, said Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, chief executive officer of the Information Technology Authority (ITA), on Saturday.

Speaking at the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2011 event held at Hotel Grand Hyatt, he said there has been considerable focus on improving the information and communication technology services in the Sultanate over the years. He said that the recent data proves that the Sultanate has not only improved its services it has also consolidated its position in the area.

The ultimate objectives behind employing these technologies include bolstering professional performance, offering high-quality services, saving time and effort, enabling individuals of society to participate actively and benefit from the fruits of modern technology, through training and qualification programmes, and, eliminating digital illiteracy, Ruzaiqi said.

“The ICT sector has become the most important economic resource of its time. It is as important as natural resources. Suffice it to say that the most advanced countries and successful companies around the world are those which adopt and benefit from the ICT sector. This emphasises the importance of speeding up societal transformation. In other words, society must shift from depending on the traditional methods and styles in relation to management and offering services into acquiring information and knowledge of the modern means which the information and communication technology sector provide,” he said.

The theme of this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was ‘better life in rural communities with information and communication technologies’.

The event was organised jointly by ITA, the Ministry of Transport and Communications, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). The celebrations were held under the patronage of HE Dr Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Salim Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications. HE Eng. Ali Bin Masoud Al Sunaidy, Minister of Sports Affairs and Chairman of ITA; Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA; and other top government officials were also present in the ceremony.

At the event, Omantel and Nawras gave their presentations about their services and growth in the sector in the Sultanate. This was followed by a skit depicting the challenges Omanis face when seeking medical information or employment, prior to the development of the information and communication technology and the availability of e-services.
