Transforming Government since 2001
Oman’s first exclusive IT ‘knowledge centre’ for women will come up in Shinas in the Batinah region.

The ‘Women’s Community Knowledge Centre’ (WCKC) is part of the National IT Training and Awareness Framework (NITTA) initiative, a government-sponsored nationwide e.oman initiative.

The e.oman campaign aims at developing Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills and capability and increasing ICT awareness and proficiency within the government and the local community. Four CKC, open to both men and women, already function in Muscat, Salalah, Sur and Sohar.

The community IT training project seeks to spread digital awareness among individuals of all segments of society by conducting free training programmes in information technology. Programmes at the centres are supervised by Omani IT training specialists, offering various courses on computer foundations and the Internet.

“This will better prepare and enable citizens, women and men alike, to interact with information communication technology (ICT) and derive benefit from the eServices provided by government,” a spokesperson for the Information Technology Authority (ITA) said.

ITA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Qalhat LNG which will support the establishment of the Shinas WCKC. Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of ITA, inked the deal with Harib bin Abdullah Al Kitani, CEO and General Manager of the company.

“We are happy for this cooperation between the Information Technology Authority and Qalhat LNG in helping to deliver NITTA framework projects, where we aim to launch Community Knowledge Centres in all regions and wilayats in Oman, in an effort to help transform the sultanate into a knowledge society,” Ruzaiqi said.

He added Phase 2 of the scheme would begin soon and the ITA was planning to launch six more CKCs in the coming year.

“And, with the launch of the very first WCKC in Shinas, we are beginning Phase 1 of establishing Women Community Knowledge Centres with the cooperation of the Omani Women’s Association, working towards having nine such centres across the sultanate,” Ruzaiqi said.

By training women of the community in ICT skills, he added, “we empower them with knowledge and by extension we help to educate their families.”
