Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy told mediapersons here on Friday that the World e-Governments Organisation of Cities and Local Governments (WeGO), a Korea-based organisation has chosen the Palike in the best e-government efficiency category for the first WeGo Awards-2012.

India has fallen by five places in the UN e-government survey 2012 from 119 in 2010 to 124 in 2012. The survey which was released on March 6, 2012 places the Republic of Korea at the top position followed by the Netherlands.

United Kingdom (UK), Denmark and the United States of America (USA) follow in ranking in that order. USA has slipped by three positions and is placed at fifth position as compared to the second position two years ago.

Replying to supplementaries during Question Hour, he said e-readiness is the measure of the quality of country's information community technology (ICT) infrastructure and ability of its consumers, businesses and Government to use ICT for their benefit.

United States leads the chart with 220 million internet users followed by China (210 million) and Japan (88.1 million).

Brazil comes next to India with 53.1 million users, UK 40.2 million, Germany 39.1 million, Republic of Korea 35.5 million, Italy 32 million and France 31.5 million.

According to the UN E-government Survey 2008, India has slipped 26 places in the last three years and been overtaken by countries like Maldives (ranked 95), Sri Lanka (101) and even Iran (108). However, they too, have themselves slipped from their 2005 rankings.

The next five positions were bagged by Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Punjab.

Goa, Jharkhand, Kerala were declared as joint winners of the `Progressive e-Governed State' at the award function organised by the CSI to recognise the best e-governance initiatives in the country, especially in the government sector.

Department of Electricity of Lakshadweep, and Department of Health and Family Welfare, Gujarat were declared joint winners under the `Best e-governed Department' category.

The e-governance initiatives taken up by the state has helped the government to provide a transparent, speedy and cost effective service in public and private domains. Himachal Pradesh happens to be the first state to launch state-wide area network in the country. A network operation centre has also been set up to provide unified placement of data for the entire state at one place for this.

Himachal Pradesh has been declared as the second best state in the country in e-governance. Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee will give away the award during the 10th International Summit and Expo Power - 2008 to be held on November 8, in Mumbai. An assessment in this regard has been done by India Tech Foundation, Mumbai, on application of information technology (IT) and its use in government institutions.

Talking to Kerala IT News, Cherian Philip, Chairman, KTDC said, “As the official host to God’s own country, this website is a great asset for us. We have realised that online booking is our greatest weapon for tourism promotion. The award is recognition of our efforts to adopt the latest technology to boost our business.”

Delhi tops in nine of the 14 parameters

Delhi tops the list of “Best e-governed States of 2007.”

In a survey conducted by a private group, Goa has moved down to the second spot, followed by Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The national awards for e-governance for 2007-08 were announced by the Central Government. Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology A Raja will give away the awards during the 11th National Conference on e-Governance to be held at Panchkula, Haryana on February 7-8.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have climbed three spots over their last years ranking to emerge as the No 1 and No 5, respectively as per the survey conducted for the year 2008-09 by IDC, a global provider of market intelligence for IT.

Waseda University Institute of e-government in Tokyo, Japan has released its annual report entitled Waseda University International e-Government Ranking. The 2009 report is the fifth report on the observation of e-government development in the world.

There are 34 countries with various levels of economic growth all over the world. The countries include South Africa, United States of America, Holland, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, China, Fiji, Philippines, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, England, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, France, Peru, Russia, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Intelligent Community Forum (www.intelligentcommunity.org) announced today its highly anticipated list of the Smart21 Communities of 2011.  The announcement was made by ICF Co-founder Louis Zacharilla at an event hosted by Suwon, South Korea, ICF’s 2010 Intelligent Community of the Year.

The report noted that Denmark’s level of network readiness had to do with an excellent regulatory environment, in addition to clear government leadership and vision in leveraging ICT for growth and promoting ICT penetration and usage.
