Indonesia is better than India, South Africa and China.

Waseda University Institute of e-government in Tokyo, Japan has released its annual report entitled Waseda University International e-Government Ranking. The 2009 report is the fifth report on the observation of e-government development in the world.

There are 34 countries with various levels of economic growth all over the world. The countries include South Africa, United States of America, Holland, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Chile, China, Fiji, Philippines, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, England, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Norway, France, Peru, Russia, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The observation was conducted along 2008 in three different periods. Preparation period was from April to July, researches were carried out from August to November while reviews and data completion took place from December to January 2009.

Out of 34 countries observed, Indonesia was ranked 23 in the best e-government administration list above India, South Africa and China that are positioned in number 24 until 26 respectively. Although declining one level from the 2008 rank, Indonesia’s quality of e-government has been much improving compared to 2007. During that time, Indonesia was ranked 29 out of 32 countries. Despite the fair achievement, Indonesia could not still outrank Thailand and Malaysia that are placed just above Indonesia.

“The role of e-government has been increasingly important in the condition which is caused by the global financial crisis and concerns over environmental issues,” Director of e-government Waseda University and Head of Research Team, Prof. Dr. Toshio Obi said in his report.

He also said Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) could be used as devices to solve problems and governments are the leading actors in the process. “The development of e-government within the past five years has shown that an attempt has been made to build people-oriented countries,” he said.
