Analysts say smartphones, 3G to fuel e-commerce growth

The volume of e-commerce business will get bigger in near future as the use of smartphones marked a rise in recent times, while the much-talked-about 3G technology is just in the offing, analysts said yesterday.

But they said higher transaction fees and a lack of security may discourage customers from using the e-payment methods.

Fraud, collusion in tendering process to be checked

Bangladesh's newly-introduced electronic procurement has become popular among the government agencies as many public entities are lobbying to adopt the new online purchasing system, officials said Saturday.

Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) officials said they have received nearly 25 applications from different agencies of the government to include them in the e-government procurement (e-GP) system.

Internet infrastructure of the country has achieved a mark by ensuring its back-up through connectivity of international terrestrial cable (ITC) that would ensure uninterrupted flow of information.

Industry insiders said it is a 'breakthrough' for the ICT (information communication technology) sector development which has been facing problems for long due to dependence on the lone submarine cable -- SEA-ME-WE-4.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith believes access to information technology can help beat corruption in sectors like land management, police and judiciary.

"Corruption still persists in the society. Information technology can be effectively used for reducing corruption," said Muhith, while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of BCS ICT World-12, a computer fair organised by Bangladesh Computer Samity on Tuesday.

He said that prevailing corruption in land management, police and courts can be handled effectively by use of Information-technology, because that ensured transparency.

The government of Bangladesh will begin a project to bring all government ministries, departments and organisations into one single e-governance system within one month.

Last week, the Cabinet Committee approved a Tk 2.81 billion (US$34.2 million) proposal for the procurement of equipment and services to start connecting all government entities to one state-of-the-art service delivery system.

This five-year project, called ‘Development of National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government (BanglaGovNet)’, was launched earlier as part of the ‘Digital Bangladesh’ action plan proposed by the Bangladesh Awami League in 2009.
