Leveraging information and communication technology (ICT) for Growth, Employment and Governance Project, implementation of which is now on track, would create 30,000 direct jobs in country's IT and ITES sectors.

The government of Bangladesh with financial assistance of World Bank (WB) is implementing the project, which has also potential to create up to another 30,000 jobs.

Bangladesh will receive the ‘Global ICT Excellence Award’ for using Information Technology to promote socio-economic development.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also her son, broke the news at an event in New York on Sunday.

The award will be handed over on Sept 30 in Mexico’s Guadalajara during a conference of the World Congress on ICT.

Considerable focus is on Indian IT companies for building Digital Bangladesh, a plan rolled out by the Government to take the country to the high road of prosperity in the 21st century, said Abdul Latif Siddiqui, the Bangladesh Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, in Kolkata on Friday.

He was attending ICT East 2014, a flagship event organized by CII Eastern Region in Kolkata.

The Bangladesh Government is looking at joint ventures with Indian companies in the sector. Indian companies now are mostly into trading.

The Bangladesh government is focusing on Indian information technology (IT) companies for joint venture projects in the IT sector, said the country’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) secretary Nazrul Islam Khan here on Friday.

Bangladesh government’s Minister for Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology Abdul Latif Siddiqui said that considerable focus is on Indian companies for building “Digital Bangladesh.” They were addressing the gathering at the ICT (information and communication technology) East 2014 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Eastern Region.

Bangladesh has proposed easier work permits for its IT professionals in India.

This will not only build greater synergies in information technology between the two countries but also create more near-shore outsourcing opportunities.

Bangladesh’s IT export revenues stood at around $250 million in 2013-14 against India’s $110 billion. The neighbouring country has seen its IT market registering a 100 per cent growth in the last fiscal. The buoyancy has been achieved largely on the back of start-up companies and the entrepreneurship-enabling environment.
