The government has set up a computer incident response team (CIRT) at Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) to secure its online public service delivery platform network, official sources said.

They said the CIRT has been set up under a World Bank-funded Leveraging ICT for Growth, Employment and Governance (LICT) Project to protect its e-(electronic) government platform from the fast growing cyber attacks and cyber crimes.

The philanthropic wing of a Singaporean business organisation will support Bangladesh especially in upgrading technical education and ICT ventures, its top executives have said.

A senior executive of the Temasek Foundation told the FE that they have plans to help Bangladesh upgrade its technical and vocational education and ICT into new heights with financial and technical assistance.

The government's decision to energise the once-vibrant postal department with e-services, along with strengthened logistics, has been received with mixed reactions. Although there were voices raised for sometime now to make effective use of the country-wide postal network -- now almost non-functional -- the ways to do so were not clear enough. Understandably, the thought of utilising the idle postal network ran short of ideas. Now that the government has announced its schemes, many quarters are sceptical that these may not auger well with the current state of things, especially in the context of the services delivered by the private sector.

Planning to curb all kinds of telephony crimes, cellular phone operators in the country are going to start trial of biometrics SIM registration system tomorrow.

Bangladesh as the second country has taken the initiative to introduce the human body-based indentifying system to ensure the ownership of mobile phone number, said officials of posts and telecommunications division.

Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the process on Wednesday by registering a SIM for himself.

“Bangladesh is the second country in the world to introduce this and I am proud of it,” he told a ceremony at the telecoms ministry.

A SIM card by state-owned operator Teletalk was issued to Joy, the prime minister’s son and her adviser.
